The union vision

SIPTU does not just fight for wages and conditions but promotes a wider vision of social justice.

Its banner has appeared on anti-war marches, May Day rallies and a variety of protests. Its founding members, James Connolly and Jim Larkin, were active socialists - of the genuine variety.

Their vision had nothing in common with the failed model of the USSR. They wanted workers control, public ownership of the major corporations, and a democratically planned economy.

I want to continue and update that socialist vision for the 21st century.

The other big vote this year will be on the Lisbon Treaty.

The Treaty will put the EU into a neo-liberal straightjacket.

It will force us to increase military spending.

It does nothing to create a democratic, social Europe. We should vote NO.
