A strong trade union should stand up for its members and ensure that they are getting well paid.
Members should feel proud of the union and know that it is willing to fight for their interests. But this is not the case in our union at the moment. The union leaders have promoted social partnership which has restrained wages while prices and profits have shot up.
The pay increases agreed under the last national pay deal do not even cover the rate of inflation. Benchmarking has also been a disaster for many public sector workers.
If elected as General Secretary of SIPTU I am pledged to halt this retreat and promote a strong, fighting union that stands up to the employers and the government.
