His section has run a successful campaign to extend the defined benefit pension scheme to contract staff and, as a result, have recruited nearly 100 extra members. He firmly believes that the union needs to take a stronger stance. He has participated in many SIPTU conferences where he moved resolutions calling on the union to take action.
On one occasion, for example, he moved a successful resolution calling for SIPTU to organise mass demonstrations over the state of the health service. But nothing was done bar writing a letter to the ICTU.
If the strongest union in the Ireland had mobilised, it might have brought some real changes. The General Secretary is charged with running the internal organisation of SIPTU, promoting the education of members and putting over the union case to the general public.
Kieran Allen will help to develop a strong, positive image for SIPTU that will help to strengthen our union. More importantly, he is pledged to help open the way for more grassroots involvements so that we can march forward as a strong, united movement.
